EY Y03 L06 TV Commercials

This week’s Questions

  1. TV commercials often use very short songs, called 'jingles' to make their product or some of the features of their product easy to remember. Tell us about a well known or famous jingle in Japan.
  2. Japanese TV commercials can often command a big budget and attract internationally famous actors, sports personalities or celebrities. Tell us about a TV commercial in Japan (past or present) that features or has featured a foreign star. What do they (the star) do in the ad?
  3. Some TV commercials are very seasonal or tied to specific holidays or events. For example, in the US, beer commercials are common during, or in the lead up to, The Super Bowl. Tell us a TV commercial or product that is seasonal and on heavy rotation only during specific times of the year in Japan.
  4. When an advertising agency or TV production company really nails it, they can create a TV commercial that runs for a very long time (often with the same celebrity). Tell us about a TV commercial that has been a 'long runner' in Japan. Who is in it? What is the product? Why is it popular do you think?
  5. Some Japanese celebrities are lucky enough to get a significant amount of money each time they appear on a TV commercial. Tell us about a Japanese celebrity who makes a lot of money from TV commercials. What do they advertise? Why do you think these ads are so appealing to consumers?
  6. Some celebrities have lost their advertising contracts dues to scandals that their corporate sponsors wish to distance themselves from. Tell us about one such scandal. Who was the star? What were they selling? What did they do that caused such a scandal?

Question 1

One jingle that comes to mind when thinking about TV commercials is one that's made for Yodobashi Camera. The jingle emphasizes that there are all kinds of things that you can buy at the store; from electronics to games. It's also good for families and people of all ages. Whenever I listen to the song, I feel the urge to shop and buy all kinds of unnecessary electronics!

Question 2

The latest Softbank commercial features Bruce Willis, an international actor known for his roles in action movies. He acts as Doraemon in the commercial, wearing a blue hoodie and a rotor on top of his head. I honestly have no idea why they chose him for the role!

Question 3

I think KFC is a prime example of a seasonal commercial. There's an image of people in Japan buying KFC during Christmas. We see a lot of KFC commercials during late December in Japan. I heard that KFC fried chickens tend to sell out very quickly during this season!

Question 4

The commercial for "Akai Kitsune Udon" has been around for 41 years! Recently, the famous actress and model Riho Yoshioka star in the commercial, dressed up like a fox. I have never actually tried the cup udon, but it has a very high rating online.

Question 5

Kimura Takuya makes a lot of money from McDonald's commercials. He advertises many value packs and seasonal burgers. This commercial appeals to people as Kimura Takuya is known for his good looks and body shape. I guess people think that if Kimutaku eats McDonald's, it must be beneficial for them to do so!

Question 6

One name that pops to mind is Becky, a Japanese talent or "tarento." She lost her reputation back in 2016 when she had an affair with a musician named Enon Kawatani. I couldn't recall what commercials Becky was in but some say that she disappeared from the stage for quite a while.
