EY Y02 L30 Tax
This week’s Questions
- We are forced to pay tax in many ways. Name a type of tax in your country. Is it high? Why do you think so?
- Do you live in a country where tax money is spent wisely? Why do you think that?
- Do you feel that there are people in society who are taxed unfairly (too high or too low)? For example; big businesses, small businesses, retired people, young people, women, home owners, families, car owners etc.
- There are many times in life we have to pay large amounts of tax. For example, receiving an inheritance, buying a car, buying a luxury item, buying or selling a house, receiving a salary etc. Tell us a way that you have found or that you have heard of to minimize or avoid tax.
- If you had control of the budget in the town or city where you live, what would you like to build for or give to the people who live there?
- If you could tax something more heavily to discourage its use (for example; cars, alcohol, tobacco, sugar, pachinko, gasoline, cosmetics, meat, plastics) what would you tax? Why?

Question 1
As I only know about taxes in Japan, I think that the pension service tax is pretty high. Even when I was still a university student, the total amount of money that I had to pay adds up to more than 600.000 yen.Question 2

In the case of Indonesia, I heard that the amnesty tax requires business owners to pay way more than regular workers. I believe that this is inequitable.Question 4
When I go on a shopping spree in Europe, I use my status as a traveler to avoid consumption tax. Taking an example, I would get more than $100 back when buying a bag or shoes for $1000.Question 5
Recently, I have noticed that there are more and more homeless people in Kyoto. This is most likely because of the pandemic. I would build a homeless shelter and allocate some of the tax money to homeless people so that they have another chance at living decent lives.Question 6
I would tax tobacco way more than how much it is taxed right now. It's bad for both the smokers and passive smokers' lives. I would make it similar to how much it is taxed in Australia.Tough Vocabulary
