EY Y03 L25 Gambling

  1. Have you ever been to a casino, a pachinko parlour, a race track or some other kind of gambling establishment? If so, how was it? Did you enjoy yourself? Did you win any money? If not, would you like to visit such a place?
  2. Have you ever played the lottery? If so, did you win anything? If not, would you like to try it someday?
  3. Have you ever made a bet with a friend, family member or co-worker? If so, tell us about it. What did you bet on? What did the winner receive? Did you win the bet? If not, what is something that you might bet on in the future?
  4. Have you ever invested or would you ever invest in the stock market? Do you consider this to be gambling? Why?
  5. In 2018, lawmakers passed legislation that will allow several casinos to open in Japan in the near future. Where do you think would be the best location for a Japanese casino?
  6. How do you think Japan will benefit from allowing casinos to open? How might this negatively impact the country?

Question 1

I’ve never been to one, but my parents often go to the casino in Marina Bay Sands in Singapore as a leisure activity. I want to try it one day just for the experience!

Question 2

No, I’ve never bought any lottery tickets or anything of that sort. Statistically speaking, you’re more likely to get into an automobile accident on your way to the lottery ticketing place than to actually win it! I think it’s a waste of money. Investing is a much better option.

Question 3

I made a bet with my sister about two years ago. She has been saying that she wants a Birkin bag but never actually got one so I challenged her to get one within the next 12 months. If she succeeds, I will buy mom her dream Dior bag. However, if she loses, she’s going to be the one who has to buy the bag. I eventually won the bet and my sister is now saving up to buy the Dior bag for my mom.

Question 4

I have been investing since when I was 20. My father encouraged my sister and me to think about money differently. I've learned a lot of valuable things from investing in the stock market as well as mutual funds. I don't consider this gambling since there are ways to predict the market and analyze trends. I tend to invest and hold long-term as I find it safer and easier to predict.

Question 5

I think densely populated areas are the best for casinos to open. If I were to open one, I'd choose Tokyo or Osaka!

Question 6

I think people will spend more money, thus promoting economic growth and create new job openings. On the other hand, there are people who will borrow money from banks and loan sharks just to be able to gamble in a pachinko!
