EY Y03 L16 Buying Clothes

  1. Tell us about the clothes you are wearing today. Where did you buy them?
  2. What is the most expensive thing you have on your person? How much did it cost? Was it a good purchase? Why?
  3. For some people, buying clothes is a relaxing hobby. For others, buying clothes is a stressful and uncomfortable process. How do you feel about clothes shopping? Have you always felt that way?
  4. Do you shop for clothes online, in stores or both?  What brands, outlets or online stores do you recommend?
  5. We all have clothes purchases we regret. Tell us about an expensive purchase that you never wore. Where did you buy it? Why did you buy it? Why did you never wear it?
  6. The price of clothes has dropped in recent years as a result of "fast retailing" but this has led to many problems with clothing waste. When you clear your closet, how do you get rid of your unwanted clothes? Should the national or local governments do more to address disposable fashion? How could they do that?

Question 1

I bought them when I visited my friend in Paris. It's from a department store called Galleries Lafayette.

Question 2

When it comes to articles of clothing, it's definitely my watch. It was a birthday present from my dad and I was pretty surprised when I received it. The watch brand is Panerai and it costs about 1.2 to 1.6 million yen (I'm not sure how much it costs at the time since luxury watch values always go up and down). It was a good purchase for my dad as I was very happy with it and now we have matching watches!

Question 3

I think it's one of life's greatest pleasures. I think I got this attitude/view from my mother as she absolutely loves shopping. My dad's the opposite. He always waits outside of the store while we shop for hours. I've always felt that way since when my mom brought me shopping in one of Singapore's oldest department stores, Takashimaya.

Question 4

I mostly shop for clothes in stores. It's kind of like the difference between reading books analog vs. digitally. There's just another element to trying on new clothes and seeing another version of yourself in the mirror. Some of the brands that I particularly like are Givenchy, Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Kenzo, Ralph Lauren, and Valentino. With that being said, I do occasionally browse through apps like Farfetch and Flannels to check out the new designs when a new season arrives. If they don't have it at the stores, I can't really do anything but order them online.

Question 5

I once bought a Gucci t-shirt that has a huge cat's face printed on it. I really like cats and I also love Gucci, so I thought that this t-shirt represents the perfect combination. It looked really cute when I tried it but some of my friends told me that it looks tacky. I never wear it ever since and sold it online for a decent price.

Question 6

I usually sell clothes that I don't wear anymore. Some apps that I recommend are Mercari (メルカリ), Rakuma, and eBay. I tried selling some of my t-shirts and jackets to one of those second-hand clothing shops like 2nd Street and Brand Off, however, the prices that they offer are ridiculously low.
