EY Y03 L13 Famous Resignations

  1. People resign from their job for many reasons. Name one.
  2. In Japan, how do people usually resign?
  3. Have you ever quit a job? If yes, tell us about why you did it and how you did it. Did you regret it? Why? If no, tell us about someone you know personally who quit their job. What happened? Are they happier now?
  4. There are often famous resignations on the TV that have been caused by controversy, failure, scandals or public disagreements. Tell us about a famous newscaster, politician, public servant, celebrity, artist or sports personality who quit in a dramatic fashion. What happened?
  5. Tell us about a time where someone being fired or quitting has had disastrous consequences for a sports team, company, pop group, TV show or political party. You can use a personal anecdote or something that you heard or read about.
  6. Which celebrity, sports coach or politician do you think should resign? Why?

Question 1

One common reason is that they are unhappy with their current job. Either they don't like the new role they're in or they really don't like their manager. I saw some statistics before that claimed that around 57% of employees leave their job because of a bad manager.

Question 2

I'm not sure how things work in Japan, but in the Philippines an employee just needs to submit their 2 weeks notice to their employer and the company basically can't do anything about that anymore.

Question 3

I have never been fired from work, it's always an amicable resignation with my bosses or the completion of a short term contract. I never regretted resigning from any of my jobs and have only gotten better job opportunities after each one. There is one job that I was VERY happy to leave. Our boss was a crazy rich man that would often make unreasonable requests like forcing us to work on our days off or assigning a task he needs done immediately one minute before the end of the work day, and he doesn't pay overtime. One time I was assigned to a design project, but my boss was the one that had the final check of the project and he said it was okay and approved it, not noticing the error. When we noticed the error after printing the deisgn he blamed it all on me and made me pay for everything. All of my colleagues resigned in the same year and that company had to close down soon after. I think he deserves it, he was such a terrible man.

Question 4

The only one I can remember right now was when Shinzo Abe resigned due to his failing health. I remember everyone being shocked about it. I never saw the resignation on TV and only heard it from people and read about it on news sites. I've always thought that was very sensible, because if you cannot do your job properly anymore, it's your responsibility to say so and stop working.

I remember when Johnny Depp was fired from his acting jobs because of the domestic abuse case with his ex-wife Amber Heard. The fans were shocked and upset about hearing the news and why he was fired from his job because other famous actors have done the same and weren't punished as severely. A few months later Johnny Depp counter-sued Amber Heard and was able to provide much more evidence that she was lying about everything and is actually the one that was abusing Johnny Depp! Fans boycotted all the films where Johnny Depp was supposed to act in but got fired from. Those movies didn't do very well. And fans had a huge outcry about getting Amber Heard fired from her acting jobs too, like in Aquaman. I think she did eventually get fired from her role as more evidence about Amber Heard abusing Johnny Depp showed up in court. I'm so glad that Johnny Depp was able to prove he is innocent, he is such a good actor and I had always believed that he was a good man.

Question 6

Hands down I believe that Duterte and his entire cabinet, Bato, Duque and Bong Go should be removed from power. They have only proved to be incompetent with their jobs and have put the Philippines in unprecedented debt and economical damage that will continue for decades. Their mishandling of the Covid-19 pandemic is beyond embarassing and they are all traitors for not defending the Philippine territory from China. I will support any cause they removes them from the government as soon as possible. I'm so excited to vote next year.
