EY Y01 L13 Privacy

  1. Are you a shy person? Why do you think so?
  2. Everyone has a neighbour, associate or colleague that gossips a little too much or is careless about the privacy of others. Tell us about one time that they have said something to or about you that has made you feel uncomfortable.
  3. Do you use social media like mixi, facebook, twitter, instagram or LINE? Who do you read about? What do you post? Is it interesting? Why? If you have never used social media, why do you think it is so prevalent and addictive?
  4. Tell us about the last time a salesperson made you feel uncomfortable. What were they selling?
  5. There have been many famous data leaks in Japan (and around the world). Tell us about one you remember. Did it change your impression of that company? Why?
  6. Some academics and journalists believe that we are living in a world that is similar to the dystopia in George Orwell's 1949 classic "1984". Every large company in the world is in a race to glean, buy or steal your personal information. What can or do you do to protect your private or personal information?

Question 1

This is a complex question. As a child I was very shy, but as an adult I have become less shy. As an adult in Japan I am not considered shy, however in New Zealand I would be considered on the quiet side, especially if I do not know you.

Question 2

I had a colleague that gossips too much, some of which is speculative gossip too. This type of gossip annoys me as it has no factual basis and if someone thinks that this gossip is true than a bad situation can arise.

Question 3

I do not use social media so much. When I do use it, I use it like a more interactive form of email so I can communicate with my friends and family and share photos.

Question 4

This is a small incident, but it still annoyed me. I went to a convenience store, I selected the item I wanted then I went to pay for it. When the staff member was giving me my change, she threw the coins onto the coin tray. I thought this was a little rude.

Question 5

I think Facebook has had a big data leak. My image of facebook has not changed as I think hackers are very clever and are always trying to steal information and it was a matter of time until they found a way to hack facebook.

Question 6

I protect my private info online by rarely using my full name or accurate birthday. I do use it on official websites like banking websites though.

There’s very little difference between gossiping about someone speculatively and actively trying to spread a rumour. You can only hope that these people alienate themselves over time through their own stupidity, that others eventually see these people for who they really are.
