EY Y01 L11 Extreme Weather

  1. What is your favourite season? Why?
  2. Do you live in a country with a rainy season? When is it? What do you have to do to prepare for, or cope with, this season?
  3. Which area in your country has the best climate in your opinion? Would you like to live there? Why?
  4. Tell me about a country or region in the world that suffers from extreme weather (heat/drought, flooding, low temperatures, typhoons/twisters/hurricanes, heat waves, sandstorms, hail, tsunami etc.)? How does the extreme weather adversely affect the people there? What do people do there to try to protect themselves or minimise the damage?
  5. What is the worst weather you have ever experienced in Japan (or anywhere)? What happened?
  6. What do you think of people who say that the world is not warming and suffering from more extreme weather? Does the future of our climate worry you? Why?

Question 1

It's a tricky question. In Japan I like fall as the weather is less humid but still warm. In New Zealand I like summer because it is during the end of year celebrations and it is also not humid.

Question 2

I lived in Mexico which has a small rainy season window. It was not a problem as the season is very short.

Question 3

New Zealand is a very small country but the North Island is slightly warmer than the South Island. I enjoy the South Island's summers but I prefer the North Island's winters.

Question 4

As I said before, I lived in Mexico which has very dry weather for most of the year. As a result bottled water is extremely expensive. Beer and cola are usually cheaper options. Most people in Mexico do not take a bath as there is not much water, showering or using a water bucket are more economical options.

Question 5

The worst weather which I have experienced was when I was backpacking through Europe. I was in Romania when the temperature reached over 48 degree Celsius. That is too hot for me, especially at night time when it didn't seem to get cooler. I later learned that some people died because of this heat wave and that it was an extremely rare event.

Question 6

I think there is significant data supporting the global warming theory. It is a worry but it is difficult to convince people to change how they live day to day and their habits.

Tough Vocabulary

economical 倹しい

Climate change is not so much about the little guys like you and me but rather the big companies that refuse to change their ways as it means spending or losing too much money. I blame the energy companies most of all for the state we’re in today. Apparently they knew what was coming as far back as the 80s but they did nothing to course correct the planet because of the almighty dollar. It makes me sick sometimes, the evil that people do to earn or save a buck.
