Question 1

Instagram is a popular form of social media. I use it the most out of these listed platforms. In fact, it’s really the only one I use regularly. I also use Facebook daily. Facebook is a great way for me to keep up with my family and friends back home. I use Instagram mostly for following accounts that I like, either for entertainment or education.

Question 2

I think TikTok is the most popular in Japan because I have heard many young people talk about it. Their videos are also shared across other platforms. I’m not sure how long it will be popular, though, because I remember Vine being similarly popular, but it was shut down shortly after.

Question 3

I follow some photography accounts, both of nature and of space. I also like to follow several holistic psychologists who give very helpful advice about self improvement and other areas of life. I try to keep my algorithm positive.

Question 4

I think being an influencer has become popular because it is not a “normal” job. People are tired of 9-5 jobs and this is a good way to get out of that routine. It’s not a perfect job, though, because to be successful you have to stay very busy. It can even take up more time than a 9-5 job because of brainstorming, filming, editing, marketing, etc. Many influencers don’t get much sleep.

Question 5

I actually tried it after Pokemon Go came out. I started making videos for fun. It wasn’t really my intention to become an influencer. I was just enjoying my hobby and documenting fun game events and making unboxing videos. Eventually it was too much work and I stopped making videos, but it was an interesting experience.

Question 6

Besides the obvious YouTuber, Hikakin, I remember seeing a lot of Hajime Shacho videos a few years ago. To me, it seems like he was the right age, right personality, and joined YouTube at the right time. He chose a very catchy nickname and was quite funny to watch. He joined UUUM early on, which definitely helped him get his name out. I don’t know what he is doing these days, though. Overall, I think timing is very important for influencers.
