Question 1

Bicycle theft is a common crime in Japan. Osaka has the highest rate of bicycle theft with between 4-5 stolen per 1,000 people. I even know someone who has had their bicycle stolen. I'm pretty sure the penalty is a fine or jail time for theft, though I couldn't find a definite answer.

Question 2

I consider Japan to be a safe country. I think it is safer now than 20 years ago in terms of personal safety, but it's possible that minor crimes such as theft may be the same or higher. I have heard that many crimes also go unreported, but that may have been the case for many years.

Question 3

I am not worried about crime in my area. I will still lock my windows and door, but I highly doubt anything would happen if I didn't. Generally, people in Japan keep to themselves and we are all used to nothing happening. That's why it's such a big deal on the news when something does happen.

Question 4

I have been warned by many Japanese friends about an area in downtown Osaka that is known for being dangerous. I'm not really sure what goes on there, but I don't really want to make a trip there just to find out.

Question 5

I don't really think of specific countries, but big cities generally have higher crime rates. I remember being in Chicago with my father on a trip and this man kept following us, asking for money. We tried to ignore him but he was becoming more aggressive. My father finally gave him some money and he left us alone. We have also been asked for money in Dallas almost every time I visit my father there. It makes me feel unsafe and uncomfortable.

Question 6

Recently, four bosozoku, aged 16-18 and dressed as Spiderman, were arrested after making a scene in Saga prefecture. Since they are young they will probably get off with a warning, but I really wish the police would do more about noisy motorcycles going through town at night.
