EY Y01 L37 Bad Habits

This week’s Questions

  1. There are many bad habits of other people that annoy us when walking on the street, sharing a train, driving in our cars or when we are at work. Tell me one using the pattern "I hate it when....".
  2. What, if anything, do you do when someone does this?
  3. We all have bad habits ourselves that we are not proud of. These include snacking too often, smoking, binge drinking, being idle around the house, being messy, being late, being disorganized, being too loose with money, being curt with strangers, putting others down, ignoring family members and eating things that taste good but may ultimately be hurting us. Tell us about a bad habit you have.
  4. How, when and why did you pick up this bad habit?
  5. How have you tried to beat this habit? Is it something you can beat?
  6. Tell us about a bad habit you have made someone lessen or quit (a friend, spouse, colleague, sibling or son/daughter). Were you successful by carrot* or by stick** or by a combination of both?
*carrot=誘因、動因、インセンティブ, **stick=意欲をそぐ、行動を妨げる、阻害要因、脅迫、脅し、罰すること、処罰されていること

Question 1

I hate it when people cough or sneeze without covering their mouth.

Question 2

I don't do anything because it feels like it will be rude to do so. But when people I know do it, I try to kindly remind them to cover their mouth.

Question 3

My two worst habits are eating delicious food that may be unhealthy for me and staying up too late. My husband and I both teach in eikaiwa schools so we get home quite late. The only time we have together would sometimes be after 10pm, so we end up staying up late because work doesn't start until the afternoon the next day anyway. I have always enjoyed eating and making food. I almost went to culinary school! Food and travel are the only two things I spend money on.

Question 4

I have always loved eating and have been overweight since I was a child. I have been on a diet my entire life. The bad sleep schedule only started when I started working in English-Please! but got worse over the Christmas break when my husband and I would stay up really late playing games and watching movies, haha!

Question 5

I have been trying to improve my eating habits by using an app on my phone to keep track of my weight and the food I eat. I have lost 4 kilos since I started in January. I allow myself a cheat day every week, and that keeps me happy. If I want to really eat some kind of high calorie food, I just eat lower calorie meals the rest of the day. I am also trying to adjust my sleep schedule but it's not working out too well.

Question 6

I used both the carrot and the stick method to help my husband quit drinking. I wouldn't give him money to buy alcohol, but I would give him money to buy as many non-alcohol drinks he wants. It's been so effective that he doesn't want to drink alcohol anymore even when he has money, and it also helped us save a lot of money! We are going to Bali in March for our first wedding anniversary using our savings!

Question 1

I hate it when people, who I do not know, touch me by being to close to me. I understand that sometimes it is unavoidable, such as in when the train is very crowded - this is fine for me. I get annoyed when the train is empty and someone squashes me.

Question 2

I always move to another place as there are often lots of space. I find it so strange that people want to sit so close to me.

Question 3

I love junk food. I love burgers and fried chicken the most, eventhough I know that it is bad for me. So, I only eat it once a fortnight.

Question 4

I think I picked up this bad habit during my teens. My first part-time job was at McDonald's while I was at high school. Employees got discounts on food that they purchased.

Question 5

I haven't tried to beat it, but eat it less. I still enjoy it but in moderation.

Question 6

I managed to get a friend to stop drinking a large bottle of cola every day. I showed him what sugar does to the body and he managed to drink a lot less and he lost a massive amount of weight.

Question 1

I hate it when I see people litter. I was walking home from the train station last week and I saw someone throw a huge bag of trash next to the Yamatagawa river. He was on his bike, so he obviously lives in my neighborhood. I don' understand how people can do this.

Question 2

I usually don't say anything, but I said to him "Is that trash"! Really! I think that he was embarassed, but he didn't pick up the trash.

Question 3

I would say being loose with money and not being able to save money are my biggest bad habits.

Question 4

I think it started when I was around 12 years old. I used to deliver newspapers for my first job. Friday was when I collected the delivery fee from my customers. I would pass the convenience store on my route and would often spend some of the money before I got home.

Question 5

I have tried to open a seperate savings account, but I always end up spending the money that I trid to save. An unexpected expense or a credit card bill always comes up.

Question 6

I remember that my dad started smoking again after he had quit for many years. He would hide it from me. He went to the local coffee shop to smoke. My friend from school worked there. She said to me one day "I didn"t know that your dad smoked". I said "I didn't either". I confronted my dad and said "You shouldn't smoke". He quit again soon after.
