Question 1

I used to prefer CD but nowadays I use Youtube and streaming. There is so much music out there so it is impossible to listen to it all, but I switched because CD is limited (although I like listening to an album's flow) while streaming and using Youtube is mostly free with unlimited choice.

Question 2

I usually listen to it on the couch to release stress. Sometimes I even play air guitar in the living room.

Question 3

No, I can't play an instrument. I tried to play the bass guitar when I was a teenager, but I lost interest quickly.

Question 4

I listen to heavy metal the most. I started to love it when I was around 9 years old. The story goes that I got a radio for my nineth birthday. I asked my dad to dial in the channel that we listened to in the car. He likes classic rock from the 60s and 70s (I do too). I listened to that station for a while and then I got adventurous and randomly tried new stations. I found a heavy metal channel playing Black Sabbath and I absolutely loved it.

Question 5

My favorite albums is Nirvana's "Nevermind" which is a grunge album. If you ask me this question next week, I imagine that I will have a different choice. I like lots of different songs by many different bands. I usually like older music because music nowadays seems to be very auto-tuned.

Question 6

I have never enjoyed love songs. I get bored with slow melodies, although this is not completely true every single time. There are some slow songs which I like, but they are few and far between.

Question 1

I have been listening to Spotify and YouTube recently. I think it's very convenient. I have a large library of jazz, blues, hip-hop, reggae and rock in my hard drive collection of music. So, if I don't have WiFi it's ok.

Question 2

I would say that I listen to music the most at home working on the computer. I don't like to listen to music when I am commuting. Some foreigners play very loud music through their headphones.

Question 3

I can play the drums. I have been playing since I was 11. My father was a professional jazz drummer for over 45 years. He was always touring with his band, so I rarely saw him. I don't play very often in Japan. I don't have a drumset.

Question 4

I listen to Jazz the most because of my father, but I like most genres of music. My older brothers and sisters introduced me to the music of their generations too. I was very lucky to grow up in a musical environment.

Question 5

"A Love Supreme". The artist is John Coltrane. My brother Mickey introduced me to this album. It has an incredible sound, musicianship, improvisation, and a lot of spirituality. It's a powerful album. Elvin Jones is the drummer for John Coltrane. He is one of the greatest jazz drummers of all time. His wife is Japanese. Her name is Koko.

Question 6

I dislike country-western music. It has a bad sound to me and I dislike the depressing lyrics. I do respect the musicians very much. I just can't listen to it.

Question 1

I used to have all my favorite songs in my iPod. I lost it at some point and kinda stopped trying to store music. I sometimes listen to music on my phone via iTunes, my family has a shared account, or I'll play something on YouTube while I'm working.

Question 2

I like to listen to music when working sometimes, it helps keep me alert, I get bored when it's too quiet sometimes. I also like listening or singing in the shower, gives me something to do, but I only do this when I'm happy. I also listen to music sometimes on long journeys, but recently, I've just been reading books and I prefer not listening to music when reading so I can focus on the story.

Question 3

I can't play an instrument at all, but I really enjoy singing. I wish I took voice lessons, like my grandmother suggested when I was a child, but I didn't believe I had a good voice.

Question 4

I listen mostly to alternative music. I like listening to the interesting musical arrangements they come up with to produce unique melodies and I also loved the imagery they would have in the lyrics.

Question 5

I love listening to female singers with dreamy voices like Florence and the Machine and Laura Marling. My favorite songs are My Manic and I by Laura Marling and Safe and Sound by Taylor Swift featuring The Civil Wars. Taylor Swift sang in a completely different style for this song, this is the only time you will hear her voice sound like that, it's so different from anything she's done. I really like the lyrics of these songs, it reminds me of my relationship, the melody is also really soothing and deep.

Question 6

I really have little respect for rap songs now a days. They talk about the same thing, money, drugs, women. I don't like the values that their songs represent and feel that it's too superficial and violent.

Tough Vocabulary

- English - - Japanese -
superficial = shallow, lacking deep concepts or feelings
